Touch interfaces can either be too advanced or strangely archaic. It depends entirely on how we perceive them, sometimes. Most would agree that Sony has been a leader of the pack in innovation. This time, we have two touch-control interfaces that sound a tad complicated in functionality, which makes us believe perhaps the technology doesn’t belong in this era. Incorporated into two different versions of the IP Music Player concept of Sony, the interfaces have been designed by Eijiro Mori and Takuo Ikeda. In the first version, the device identifies virtual files on a desktop and creates icons for them in its display. The file can be accessed directly through the device. In the second version, the player has an accompanying stylus/stick that you place on the surface of the device to create sound and animations. We still aren’t quite sure about the basic process involved, so take a look at the video from the source to gain your own perspective.

Most of us have our priorities clearly defined when it comes to gadget love. However, there are times when we tend to become accommodating when the object in question is really idiosyncratic and adorable. TICKER the clockworks robot isn’t the most intelligent of robots, and we doubt if there is any intelligence exhibited by it. Standing 16 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide, it makes for a great collector’s item for two reasons. One, it is fabricated with 80% recycled materials. And two, inside its metal sheath are old French and American clock parts. Created by Will Wagenaar, the TICKER robot may not “tick” enough to deserve the name. However, it does look appealing enough for us to take it home.

Talk about projectors, and the instant association is “bulkiness.” This is something that is witnessing a gradual but steady transformation, thanks to all the buzz around portability and convenience of handling. Toshiba’s LED Pico Projector may measure just 10×4.5×1.7 cm, but the capacity it delivers is something that is clearly disproportionate to its tiny nature. It weighs 100 grams and offers projection in the range of 10 lumens, which is quite impressive. The cute little projector has already won numerous fans, and we hope the business community “pockets” the idea too!

The battle among gadget-makers has been intense over the past decade or so. However, we have come across very few instances when a brand goes head-on with another, especially in the marketing aspect. Samsung’s positioning for the X360 is a case in point. The product, apparently, has now taken the crown for the “lightest laptop,” at 1.27 kg. Samsung is making no bones about the fact that the X360 will be an Apple MacBook Air killer, which weighs 1.36kg, with a slogan that says “Lighter than Air.” However, the company has stopped short of claiming the “thinnest” tag as well. Released specs of the notebook include a 13.3inch SuperBright LED-backlit LCD, Intel Centrino 2 ULV processor (800 MHz front side bus), RAM support from 1GB to 4GB (DDR3 at 1066MHz), fingerprint reader for biometric security and most interestingly, a nano-silver ion particle treatment for the keyboard to keep bacteria at bay.

The best of technological development has inarguably been in the aesthetics department. It is indeed heartening to note that gadget-makers have begun to attribute significant focus towards creating visually appealing products. ZaNa’s Silver USB flash drive could have easily been a showpiece item, if it weren’t for its utilitarian first nature. However, it still is a class act—a product that would woo the upper strata of buyers. It is built with carbonic fiber, like F1 race cars, and is ornamented with a Swarovski Zirconia diamond sheen. Woodwork with wenge and teak add classicism to the drive, perfectly complementing its bling factor. Now, to the real technology. The stunning silver embraced USB offers up to 8GB memory capacity and read speeds of up to 21 mb/s. So, if the need is either style or functionality, you still have enough reasons to be smitten by ZaNa Silver. Make no bones about it!
