Robotics, at present, has a long way to go if your imagination of robots is confined to movies like ‘Terminator’ or other such fictitious comic characters. However, slowly it may be, robots are certainly finding their way into our lives. We may be far away from ‘robot surrounded by living tissue’ as said in the movie Terminator, but experts certainly approve that robots that enhance the ability of humans to do tasks are most likely to change our lives in the near future. Perfect example of one such robot comes from Nagoya University in Japan - a one-handed power suit made for a specific task of helping construction workers fit the ceiling panels.

‘Wearable Robot for Assisting Carpentry Workers’ as it is being called, it’s main task is to hold a heavy panel as the worker performs riveting, screwing or nailing operation with the other hand. Conventionally, this job is one of the most tedious wherein a worker has to hold the panel aloof with one hand and perform required operation with a tool with other hand!

This new robot can be worn easily while working, but which does all the heavy lifting. In operation, the workman simply has to use his own strength to guide the panel into position, after which the machinery kicks off automatically to hold it in place and does the fixing.

Results have shown that this device certainly improves productivity of human workers and hence the crew at Nagoya is researching to come up with a finished version very soon.
