Airbag For Bikers In Testing
Falling off a motorbike is no joke but then they weren’t exactly designed for safety now, were they?
Still, there are plenty of bikers out there that wouldn’t mind something to reduce the number of broken bones. A wearable airbag though is not something that usually springs to mind.
This one from Dainese has been on trial for the last year and even featured on some bikers in the 125cc World Championships. The Dainese D-Air system is positioned in the upper back aero hump of the leather racing suit. It uses accelerometers and electronically controlled rate gyros to figure out when things have gone pear-shaped and you’re about to tumble down the track.
It’s so good at this that it can deploy in 40 milliseconds. It’s not cheap and so is only race-oriented at the moment but a consumer version is planned in the coming years.-Martin Lynch
